Chainfire has confirmed that his CF-Auto-Root now supports Samsung Galaxy S6 series devices.

The initial release was for SM-G920T and SM-G925T - the T-Mobile variants of Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge respectively. But Chainfire has now added SM-G920F to the list, the international version of Galaxy S6.

The CF-Auto-Root (CFAR) for Galaxy S6 has been tested on real devices with successful root access. But rooting the S6 model is likely to trip the Knox.

Head over to the following guide to manually obtain access to Galaxy S6 using CFAR.

    Important points

    • Install appropriate USB drivers for Galaxy S6 on your OC.
    • Enable USB Debugging Mode on phone to connect it to the computer and use Android SDK with it. [Navigate to Settings>> About phone>> tap Build number seven times. A pop-up will appear, that reads, 'You are now a developer.' Go back to the Developer options and check USB debugging and click OK.]
    • As the tutorial is likely to wipe out all data of the phone, create a backup using custom recovery.
    • Ensure the battery level of your Galaxy S6 should be at least 80%.
    • Rooting the device will void the device of its manufacturer's warranty. It will also trip the Knox warranty.
    • The CF-Auto-Root file used in the guide works with Galaxy S6 SM-G920F only and flashing this on any incorrect variant might brick the device. Check the model number of the phone by navigating to Settings>> About device>> Model number.
    • IBTimes UK will not be held liable for any damage to the device.

How to root Samsung Galaxy S6 SM-G920F using CF-Auto-Root

Step-1: Extract the downloaded root package on your PC to get a file with .tar.md5 extension

Note: If you get a recovery.img and cache.img file, then you will have to extract it twice to get the .tar.md5 file.

Step-2: Switch off the Galaxy S6 and enter download mode by holding the Home, Power and Volume Down buttons together for a few seconds. If it asks you to press any button to continue the process then press the particular button

Step-3: Ensure that Galaxy S6 USB drivers are installed on the computer

Step-4: Launch Odin on the computer

Step-5: Connect your S6 to the computer using USB cable while it is in Download mode. When the phone is connected successfully, Odin will display an Added message

Step-6: In Odin click the AP button and select the .tar.md5 file that was extracted in step-1

Step-7: Ensure the Auto-reboot and F.Reset Time options are not selected in Odin, but uncheck the Repartition button

Step-8: Double check everything and hit the Start button in Odin

Step-9: The installation process will now begin. It will take a few minutes. When the installation process is completed, the phone will reboot

Step-10: You can safely unplug the phone from the computer once the home screen shows up

Troubleshoot: Sometimes the phone does not boot into recovery and roots the device. If this happens, redo the entire process. If you find the phone is still not rooted, once again perform the tutorial, but this time ensure that the Auto Reboot option in Odin is not checked.

Pull out the battery to turn off the phone. Now press the Volume Up, Home and Power buttons together to boot the phone into recovery mode. This will start the install process to root the phone

You can now enjoy root access on your Galaxy S6.
