Qualcomm probably isn’t happy that Samsung has decided to opt out of using the latest Snapdragon chipset on its newest flagship, and it seems the bad news isn’t over yet for the US chip maker. We’ve heard reports of Samsung working on a deal with MediaTek in order to use the latter’s processors in Tizen-powered devices, and the Taiwanese media is now reporting that the deal could be much closer to being final at this point.

Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything on the matter, but MediaTek’s General Managed Zhu Shan-gzu has said that the chip maker has “made progress little by little in some direction.” Those are rather vague words, but given how MediaTek’s mobile SoCs offer a great balance of performance and price, it wouldn’t be the least bit surprising to see Samsung using them in its budget and mid-range smartphones (while sticking to its Exynos chips on the high-end.
